Renowned Malawian jazz artistLawi is gearing up to release his much-anticipated 18-track album, My Father’s Land, this September, marking the end of a four-year hiatus.
The announcement came after two songs from the album, Day Time and Titani Nawo Anawa, were premiered on Channel Africa’s Africa Tonight program on Saturday.
Lawi described the upcoming project as a creative reflection of African experiences and stories. “I am an African child who is out to tell unheard stories and experiences of Africa. This continent is beautiful with amazing stories about our diverse cultures and traditions,” he shared during the interview.
Musician and producer Thocco Phiri praised the album’s depth and authenticity, particularly highlighting Titani Nawo Anawa. “Listening to the song on Channel Africa, one is left with an impression that Lawi is one of the big things on the African continent. His lyrics are inspiring because they tell authentic African stories that epitomize African people. I can’t wait for the full album release,” Phiri said.
Lawi revealed that production for My Father’s Land began in 2022, just a year after his last album's release in 2021. "The production has taken me almost three years. It’s been an incredible journey," he said. The album, produced under Lawi Group, will be promoted across the African region.
The versatile artist, known for hits like Amaona Kuchedwa, produced the album himself at his studio in Lilongwe. “Malawi is home to an endless pool of art. This time around, we are exporting Malawi music to the world. That’s why Channel Africa booked me,” he explained.
Fans can look forward to an album that promises to celebrate African culture, diversity, and the unique experiences that define the continent.
