Renowned Malawian poet and Special Presidential Adviser on Creative Industries, Q Malewezi, is set to release three new projects: a memoir, a children’s book, and a stage production.
Announcing the news on his Facebook page, Malewezi revealed that his upcoming memoir was inspired by the events surrounding his father's death. "Initially, it was meant to preserve the story for my children and nieces," he said. The memoir will go beyond recounting personal experiences by incorporating professional commentary to help readers navigate the complexities of grief. "Grief is a mental health issue, and I want to involve people who understand these issues on a deeper level," Malewezi explained.
The children’s book, My Malawi, is designed to educate young readers about the country’s history, culture, flag, and landscape. Malewezi shared that the book features narrators based on Malawian ethnic backgrounds, aiming to bridge the cultural gap for children in private schools who might be losing touch with local traditions due to foreign curriculums. "It is a straightforward, basic book to help children reconnect with their roots," he said.
Malewezi’s stage production, Fisi, is a series of monologues inspired by the folktale figure of the hyena. The narrative will explore rarely discussed societal issues such as widow cleansing. The main characters include Fisi, a young widow, and Fisi’s wife. "This project will spark conversations and encourage reflection on our cultural values, traditions, and their role in the future," Malewezi stated.
Fans have responded positively to the announcement. Chrissy Makasa noted that the memoir could offer much-needed insight into dealing with mental health challenges. Elina Mkandawire praised the children's book, emphasizing the importance of helping children understand their history and culture.
Malewezi's upcoming projects promise to contribute significantly to Malawi’s literary and cultural landscape.
