The Malawian media industry and the nation at large are in mourning following the passing of veteran radio broadcaster and diplomat Lucius Chikuni. He breathed his last in the early hours of today at Mwaiwathu Hospital in Blantyre after a prolonged battle with heart-related complications. He was 84.

Chikuni was more than just a radio personality—he was a voice that resonated across generations, a storyteller whose words painted vivid pictures of Malawi’s history and culture. His powerful and authoritative voice became a hallmark of excellence in broadcasting, earning him a reputation as one of the most influential figures in Malawi’s media landscape.

His career, which spanned decades, saw him work with renowned media houses, including MBC and Zodiak, where he captivated listeners with his eloquence and deep understanding of social and political issues. But his contributions extended beyond the airwaves. He was also an accomplished writer and playwright, celebrated for his iconic radio drama Adaferanji, which depicted the historic John Chilembwe uprising. Through his storytelling, Chikuni preserved and promoted Malawi’s rich cultural and historical narratives.

Beyond media, he also served his country in the diplomatic field, representing Malawi as an ambassador in multiple nations, including South Africa. His transition from broadcasting to diplomacy was a reflection of his leadership abilities and deep commitment to national service.

Born in Thyolo district, under the jurisdiction of Traditional Authority Chimaliro, Chikuni’s life was one of dedication and impact. His passing has left a void in both the media and diplomatic circles, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, government officials, and the general public. Many remember him not just as a broadcaster but as a mentor, a cultural custodian, and a patriot who used his voice and intellect to shape Malawi’s narrative.

As Malawi bids farewell to this legend, his legacy of professionalism, wisdom, and dedication to national development will continue to inspire generations to come.
