Nahec Proposes K3.7 Billion Budget to Boost Arts and Heritage Sector

The National Arts and Heritage Council (Nahec) task force has proposed a K3.7 billion budget to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs to support the establishment of the council and the implementation of the National Arts and Heritage Act 2024.

This proposal follows the passing of the Act in Parliament after a nine-year wait, marking a significant step toward formalizing and strengthening Malawi's creative industry.

Nahec task force secretary general, Ron Muphuwa, justified the proposed figure, emphasizing the high initial costs of setting up the council. “For Nahec to take off, there is need to set up the council. After that, marketing and research of arts and creative products will be needed to help boost the industry," he said.

The budget will cover the establishment of the council, marketing strategies, and research to enhance the creative sector. It also aims to provide grants and funding to artists, employ essential staff, and develop infrastructure to support the growth of arts and heritage.

Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM) president, Vita Chirwa, welcomed the budget proposal, describing it as a starting point for strengthening the sector. "Nahec is what the sector has needed for a very long time, and implementation is what we need now. This money is a starter pack to help the industry develop," Chirwa noted.

Chirwa further emphasized that the council's support will extend to various sectors, including music, film, visual arts, and heritage. "Every association without financial support will be looking forward to that support," he added.

Film Association of Malawi (FAMA) president, Dorothy Kingston, also highlighted the need for improved infrastructure and a structured workforce. "We do not have enough infrastructure, and as a sector, we need a lot of money," she said.

The proposed budget is seen as a crucial step toward building a sustainable and thriving arts and heritage sector in Malawi.
